Downham U9's Tournament

29 April 2006

REPORT
Reffley carried their league form into their first tournament of the summer. In the group stage of the competition Reffley were the only team of the 16 teams involved to win all of their matches. Most teams struggled to come to terms with the shortened game time of a tournament format and goals were hard to come by.

Reffley dominated in all of their matches although they had to come from 2-1 down to beat Wells.

Their match against Downham B saw Reffley play their best football of the day. They had several chances when the ball just refused to go into the net and eventually won by a single goal.

In the quarter final Reffley came up against a strong North Lynn B side and although Reffley scored first the lead was never really secure until a penalty gave them their second goal and the win.

The semi final saw Reffley up against Rocklands who had qualified by knocking out Dersingham on penalties. Both sides had chances but once again the ball would not go in, the game ended goaless and also had to be decided by penalties. Rocklands won 3-2 to see them into the final which they won 2-0 against Downham Reds. An enjoyable day out with entertaining football from all involved.

Stoke Ferry Mini-Soccer Tournament

21 April 2006

REPORT
Reffley came to the Stoke Ferry tournament to defend the title they had won last year. Despite a good start the result was to be as disappointing as the weather in what turned out to be a long and wet day.

Reffley made a confident start against an unknown Swaffham side by playing good passing football and with solid defending. Reffley never seemed troubled and took a convincing 2-0 win from their first game.

Reffley seemed to lose concentration for their second match and allowed W.S.M to make all the chances. A well taken free kick at the end of the game saw W.S.M take the points.

For the next match Reffley found their form again and remembered how to attack the opposition and make chances. Other teams within the group were noticing how well Reffley could play with the biggest win of the day at 7-0, with Daniel Howlett scoring 5 and Benedict Hazel scoring his first competitive goal.

The next game against Leverington was close with both teams having chances but with Reffley unable to make any count Leverington won 1-0.

Reffley scored first in their match against Dersingham but an own goal made the scores level. Reffley then lost concentration and had to chase the game, finally losing 3-1.

The match against Downham saw a good performance by both teams showing how well matched they are and for the third time in competitive games the result was a draw.

In the last match of the day Reffley were on top for most of the game with shots going just wide or just over the bar. Marham were the eventual 1-0 winners scoring on a counter attack with a couple of minutes left to play.

Wisbech St Mary Mini-Soccer Tournament

10 June 2006

REPORT

Reffley made a slow start in their first game against Gunthorpe but were still holding their own in a fairly evenly matched game. Reffley conceded a late goal in rather unfortunate circumstances to lose 1-0.

Reffley stepped up the pace in their second game and created some good chances but could not put the ball in the net with some good saves being made. The defence were solid and Leverington & Bridgecroft could not break it down. The game ended goalless.

Reffley carried on the good work and momentum they gained from their second game and created some good chances early in the match but still could not find a goal.  Late on Daniel Howlett scored a well-taken goal quickly followed up by a well struck free kick by Kai Neve to put the game out of WSM reach and finish 2-0.

Reffley kicked off their fourth game against March at the same time as England started their first World Cup match. Howlett scored for Reffley just before England scored but the result was the same with a 1-0 win.

Reffley’s fifth game was against Northborough and was another hard fought game with Reffley working well all over the pitch and won with two more goals from Howlett.

Reffley knew going into the final game against Eye Utd that a draw would take them through to the quarter final and a win would send them through as group winners. Reffley came out fired up and dominated the game with a solid defence and attacked hard from midfield chasing everything down up front. Two goals from Howlett started the scoring followed up by a goal from Nathaniel Hazel and the fourth from Howlett to complete his hat trick.

Reffley then had a long wait before their Q/F with Chatteris. When the time came Reffley could not get up to the standard of football that they had played in their previous games and were starting to look tired. They conceded a goal halfway through but Reffley kept battling on. The game was then put out of Reffley’s reached with a good strike late on and Chatteris finished as 2-0 winners.

Well done Reffley for winning a tight group against teams outside our normal area.

Clenchwarton Mini-Soccer Tournament

24 June 2006

REFFLEY U9's (Ben Berwick, Aidan Grange, Aaron Pyper, Nathaniel Hazel, Benedict Hazel, Kai Neve, Daniel Howlett, Kai Gilkerson)
REPORT
Reffley finished as runners-up in the Clenchwarton tournament thanks to good performances from all of the team.

Reffley began slowly against an eager Parsons Drove.  They managed to keep the scores level for most of the first half but a loss of concentration saw Parsons Drove leading by two goals at the break.  Reffley worked harder in the second half and were rewarded for their effort with a goal from Benedict Hazel but an unfortunate own goal saw Reffley finally lose 1-3.

In their second match against Clenchwarton, Reffley showed that they could play good passing football and were 1-0 up at half time with a goal from Aidan Grange. They continued to keep control of the ball in the second half, with excellent defending when required, and 2 further goals from Benedict Hazel gave Reffley a 3-0 win.

Against North Lynn, Reffley were again in control of the match.  An own goal in the opening minutes gave Reffley the lead with Daniel Howlett making it 2-0 by half time.  Nathaniel Hazel then scored the third, with a second from Howlett completing the 4-0 win.
